Sheriff Promotes Deputy

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts promoted one Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputy to serve on the Lake Murray Marine Patrol.

Metts promoted Brian Borough, 42, of Lexington, to the rank of master deputy and assigned Borough to serve on the Marine Patrol. Borough previously served as a deputy in the Traffic Division for 12 years. On August 2, 1999, Metts appointed Borough to serve as a deputy.

While he served in the Traffic Division, Borough received specialized training that he can utilize to investigate boat collisions on Lake Murray and identify and arrest persons who operate motor boats and other water devices on Lake Murray while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, Metts said. Borough received training at the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy concerning advanced driving under the influence detection, using a Datamaster machine to determine blood-alcohol content in a person’s body and reconstructing collisions.

Earlier this year, Metts hired a part-time prosecutor whom 11th Judicial Circuit Solicitor Donald V. Myers has authorized to prosecute cases in which deputies have charged persons with driving motor vehicles while under the influence of alcohol or drugs or operating water devices while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The part-time prosecutor enhances the ability of the Sheriff’s Department to successfully prosecute offenders on charges of operating a motor vehicle or water device while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
