Gold Star Award

Reserve Deputy Eligio Maoli on Thursday, May 9 received the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department Gold Star Award for the first quarter of 2013.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts selected Maoli, 62, of Elgin, to receive the Gold Star Award during a quarterly employee awards ceremony. On August 16, 2007, Metts appointed Maoli to volunteer his time and serve as a reserve deputy.

Metts created the Gold Star Award in order to recognize Sheriff’s Department employees who provide exceptional customer service to citizens. The sheriff presents the award quarterly.

Metts recognized Maoli for his actions on March 24, when Maoli came to the aid of a Columbia Police Department officer who was trying to arrest a person for shoplifting at a Kohl’s store on Harbison Boulevard in Columbia. At the time of the incident, Maoli was not on duty and was with his family at the store.

Maoli helped the Columbia police officer gain control of the person, who actively was resisting arrest, Metts said. The Columbia police officer successfully arrested the person on a charge of shoplifting without any injury to the officer or the person whom the officer arrested.

“Even though he was not on duty, Eligio saw a fellow law enforcement officer in trouble and acted with professionalism and due regard for the safety of all parties involved in the incident,” Metts said. “If Eligio had not assisted the officer, it could have escalated into a dangerous incident that would have placed the Columbia police officer and community at risk.”

During the employee awards ceremony, Andre Johnson, 44, of Lexington, was recognized as the Civilian Employee of the Quarter for the first quarter of 2013, Metts said. On June 16, 2008, Metts appointed Johnson to supervise the Information Technology Division.

On Good Friday, an important computer server began to work improperly, Metts said. Johnson worked tirelessly until after midnight on Easter Sunday to diagnose and repair problems with the server, recognizing that it would jeopardize deputies’ ability to do their jobs if the computer server crashed.

“On many occasions, Andre has worked at night and on weekends and holidays to ensure that critical computer systems at the Sheriff’s Department remain operational,” Metts said. “Andre delivers an exceptional level of customer service, and Andre inspires the employees whom he supervises to do the same.”
