Two Men Arrested for Breaking Into Garage

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputies arrested an 18-year-old Gilbert man and 26-year-old Leesville man on charges that the two men broke into a garage/workshop between 9 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. on Monday, May 6 outside a home on Sandpit Road near Leesville. The two men broke into the building with the intent to steal one air compressor and bits for a drill.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said detectives obtained arrest warrants for Christopher Alan Morgan, 18, of 108 Naomi Drive, Gilbert, and James William Whitten, II, 26, of 150 Sandpit Court, Leesville, on a charge of second-degree burglary. Morgan and Whitten were being held on Tuesday, May 7 at the Lexington County Detention Center while awaiting bond hearings.

Arrest warrants allege that between 9 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. on Monday, Morgan and Whitten, who was armed with a knife and hammer, broke a glass panel on a door and unlawfully entered the garage/workshop outside the home on Sandpit Road with the intent to steal one air compressor and drill bits, Metts said. Whitten also broke a window in a rear door in an attempt to break into the home that is adjacent to the garage/workshop.

Arrest warrants further allege that a 69-year-old man who owns the Sandpit Road home and another man found Morgan and Whitten near the property following the break-in at the garage/workshop, Metts said. The homeowner, who was home at the time of the incident, and the other man detained Morgan and Whitten at gunpoint until deputies arrived on scene and later arrested Morgan and Whitten. The homeowner also recovered the items that had been stolen from the garage/workshop.

Metts asked anyone with information about additional criminal activity involving Morgan or Whitten to contact the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC. Citizens also can provide information anonymously by accessing the Crime Tip link on the Sheriff’s Department web site (www.lexingtonsheriff.com).
