Man Arrested for Selling Stolen Pickup Truck to Metal Recycling Company

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputies on Monday, September 17 arrested a 46-year-old Lexington man who was wanted on arrest warrants that allege that the man sold a stolen 1994 GMC Sierra pickup truck to a metal recycling company, which crushed the vehicle for scrap metal the day before the vehicle was reported stolen to the Sheriff’s Department.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said deputies arrested Johnnie Wayne Martin, III, 46, of 602 Peachtree Rock Road, Lexington, on arrest warrants on charges of obtaining property under false pretenses and receiving stolen goods. Martin was released from the Lexington County Detention Center on Tuesday, September 18 after Martin posted bail totaling $5,000.

While conducting a directed patrol in his marked patrol car, Dixiana Resident Deputy Shannon Dykes recognized Martin as a wanted person when Martin drove by Dykes’ patrol car in a black Ford Bronco in the 6200 block of Edmund Highway near Lexington at 4:42 p.m. on Monday, Metts said. Dykes conducted a traffic stop on the Ford Bronco and later arrested Martin after verifying that Martin was wanted by the Sheriff’s Department on arrest warrants.

Arrest warrants allege that on August 10 Martin knowingly and willingly possessed a 1994 GMC Sierra pickup truck that later was reported stolen to the Sheriff’s Department and illegally presented the pickup truck as his own vehicle when he sold the pickup truck for $481.75 to CMC Recycling at 2308 Two Notch Road, Lexington, Metts said. CMC Recycling crushed the pickup truck, which was worth about $1,400, for scrap metal.

A woman who owned the 1994 GMC Sierra pickup truck contacted the Sheriff’s Department on August 11 in order to report the theft of her truck, Metts said. The woman told deputies that the pickup truck was not in operating condition and had been left parked in the yard of a home that the woman owns on Longview Street near Lexington. The woman does not live at the Longview Street home.

Metts asked anyone with information about additional criminal activity involving Martin to contact the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC. Citizens also can provide information anonymously by accessing the Crime Tip link on the Sheriff’s Department web site (www.lexingtonsheriff.com).
