More than 5,000 Cell Phones Donated to Cell Phones for Soldiers

The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department in partnership with the South Carolina Department of Corrections and Lake Murray ABATE has donated 5,100 used cellular telephones and 3,000 used chargers and other cellular telephone accessories to Cell Phones for Soldiers.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said Cell Phones for Soldiers sells used cellular telephones and telephone accessories to a recycling company and then uses the proceeds to buy pre-paid telephone calling cards that are issued to members of the United States armed forces who are serving our nation outside the United States.

More than 120 motorcycle riders participated in the 12th Annual Freedom Ride on September 9 from Chapin to the South Carolina State House in Columbia, with all proceeds benefitting Cell Phones for Soldiers, Metts said. Lake Murray ABATE sponsored the motorcycle ride in remembrance of Americans who died in terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

Sgt. David Amick, who supervises the Chapin Patrol District, coordinated the participation of the Sheriff’s Department in the Freedom Ride and the effort to collect used cellular telephones for donation to Cell Phones for Soldiers, Metts said.

The effort to collect used cellular telephones for donation to Cell Phones for Soldiers reflects the Sheriff’s Department mission of providing professional law enforcement services that enhance the quality of life for all people in Lexington County, Metts said.
