Officers Confiscate 21 Video Gambling Devices

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department narcotics investigators, Springdale Police Department officers and South Carolina Law Enforcement Division agents on Wednesday, September 5 seized 21 illegal video gambling devices from two convenience stores and two homes after officers who were working undercover played card games on the video gambling devices and received cash payoffs when they won games on the devices.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said a Lexington County magistrate on Wednesday determined that the 21 devices each are illegal video gambling devices, which are subject to seizure by law enforcement. Under South Carolina law, a magistrate must determine whether each individual gambling device is illegal.

Officers who were working undercover played card games on video gambling devices that the officers seized on Wednesday, Metts said. When the officers won games on the video gambling devices, the officers received cash payoffs at the locations where they played the games.

Officers seized eight illegal video gambling devices at a home at 2155-A South Lake Drive near Lexington, Metts said. Officers also seized eight illegal video gambling devices at a home at 1103 Watling Road in the town of Springdale.

In addition, officers seized three illegal video gambling devices at C-Mart at 658 Two Notch Road near Lexington, Metts said. Officers also seized two illegal video gambling devices at Mk Mini Mart at 668 Main Street in the town of South Congaree.

Metts said that the undercover investigation of illegal video gambling devices is continuing.

Metts asked anyone with information about illegal video gambling devices to call the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC. Citizens also can report information anonymously by accessing the Crime Tip link on the Sheriff’s Department web site (www.lexingtonsheriff.com).
