Bomb Squad Attains National Accreditation |
The U.S. Department of Justice Federal Bureau of Investigation Bomb Data Center has awarded national accreditation to the Lexington County Sheriff's Department Bomb Squad.
Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said the FBI also awarded hazardous device technician certifications to Col. Mel Seboe and Lt. Thomas Hamilton, who serve on the Sheriff’s Department Bomb Squad. The Sheriff’s Department Bomb Squad met training and equipment requirements that are established by the FBI's Bomb Squad Commanders Advisory Board.
“I am proud that the FBI Bomb Data Center awarded national accreditation to our agency’s Bomb Squad,” Metts said. “And I am pleased that Mel and Thomas were awarded national certifications as hazardous device technicians.”
The Sheriff's Department Bomb Squad responds to calls for help concerning military ordnance, suspicious packages, old explosives and improvised explosive devices, Metts said. Seboe and Hamilton use a remote-control robot, an x-ray machine and a suit that is designed to prevent hazardous device technicians from being injured by an explosive device. Seboe and Hamilton also use a truck that is specially designed to safely contain items that could explode.
“The citizens of Lexington County are in good hands whenever Mel and Thomas handle an incident that involves an explosive device,” Metts said. “Mel and Thomas do an outstanding job in fulfilling the collateral duty assignment of hazardous device technician.”
