Law Enforcement Re-Accreditation

In two weeks, a team of specially trained assessors with the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies Inc., commonly known as CALEA, will conduct a four-day, on-site assessment at the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department. The assessment will begin on Sunday, August 10.

Lexington County Sheriff A. Lewis McCarty said CALEA assessors will assess whether the Sheriff’s Department will maintain its status as an internationally accredited law enforcement agency. The Sheriff’s Department must demonstrate compliance with rigorous professional standards. The advanced law enforcement accreditation program that CALEA administers requires agencies to comply with 481 standards in the areas of policies and procedures, administration and operations.

McCarty invites citizens to offer comments to CALEA assessors about whether the Sheriff’s Department complies with CALEA’s accreditation standards. The assessors will conduct a public hearing at 6 p.m. on Monday, August 11 at the Lexington County Council chambers on the second floor of the Lexington County Administration Building, 212 South Lake Drive, Lexington.

McCarty also invites citizens to call CALEA assessors at (803) 785-2702 between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Monday, August 11. Members of the assessment team will answer the phone and speak with citizens who call to comment concerning whether the Sheriff’s Department complies with the accreditation standards that CALEA administers.

Citizens who want to review CALEA standards can call Sheriff’s Department Accreditation Manager Katherine Luvisi at her office at (803) 785-7599 and make arrangements to review the standards at Sheriff’s Department headquarters at 521 Gibson Road, Lexington, McCarty said.

Citizens can submit written comments to: Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc., 13575 Heathcote Boulevard, Suite 320, Gainesville, VA 20155, McCarty said. The CALEA Program Manager for the Sheriff’s Department is Maya Mitchell.

International law enforcement accreditation shows that the Sheriff’s Department maintains high professional standards in providing law enforcement services to persons in Lexington County, McCarty said. Accredited agencies are re-evaluated every three years, and they must submit annual reports to demonstrate compliance with CALEA standards. In 1999, CALEA initially accredited the Sheriff’s Department for a three-year period.

CALEA assessors will review records, interview Sheriff’s Department employees and citizens, ride along with deputies and visit Sheriff’s Department offices in order to verify compliance with CALEA standards, McCarty said. The CALEA assessors will be Capt. Warren Headrick, who serves as commander of the Criminal Investigation Division at the Blount County (Tenn.) Sheriff’s Office, and retired Colorado Springs (Colo.) Police Department Sgt. Mark Stevens.

After the assessment team completes its evaluation, it will submit a report concerning its recommendations to CALEA, which will determine whether the Sheriff’s Department will maintain its international advanced law enforcement accreditation, McCarty said.
