Man Arrested for Breaking Into Church and Home

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department detectives arrested a 49-year-old Columbia man on Monday, May 19 on charges that the man broke into a church on St. Andrews Road near Irmo and stole a 1999 GMC TG31 van with a cab, cash, a computer and checks. Detectives also charged the man with breaking into a home on Windy Run Drive near Irmo and stealing a 2004 Toyota Camry, jewelry, a laptop computer and cash.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said detectives arrested Berry William Prew, 49, of 1515 Bentley Court, Columbia, on arrest warrants on one count of second-degree burglary, two counts of third-degree burglary and two counts of grand larceny. Prew was being held on Wednesday, May 21 at the Lexington County Detention Center on bail totaling $35,000.

An arrest warrant alleges that between May 6 and May 11 Prew unlawfully entered Redeemer Lutheran Church at 525 St. Andrews Road with the intent to steal items from the church, Metts said. Prew unlawfully took possession of the church’s white 1999 GMC TG31 van with cab that was worth $2,500. Prew also stole keys to the church, one desktop computer, $70 worth of U.S. Postal Service stamps and $170 in cash from the church’s office. On Monday, the North Charleston Police Department recovered the van in the parking lot of Aloft Charleston Airport Convention Center Hotel at 4875 Tanger Outlet Boulevard, North Charleston.

An arrest warrant further alleges that on Monday Gary Loadholdt, who is the pastor of Redeemer Lutheran Church, found that Prew unlawfully was inside the church and reported the incident to the Sheriff’s Department, Metts said. Prew ate food at the church and went to sleep.

An arrest warrant further alleges that Prew left the church after being confronted by Loadholdt, Metts said. Detectives found Prew walking along St. Andrews Road near the church and arrested Prew, who possessed two rolls of U.S. Postal Service stamps and checks for the church’s bank account that had been reported stolen from the church.

An arrest warrant also alleges that at about 10 a.m. on April 21 Prew unlawfully entered a home on Windy Run Drive near Irmo and stole jewelry, one Dell laptop computer, the red 2004 Toyota Camry and cash worth a combined total of $11,135, Metts said. Deputies from the Sheriff’s Department and Richland County Sheriff’s Department recovered the red 2004 Toyota Camry parked outside a home on Apple Valley Road near Columbia.

Metts asked anyone with information about additional criminal activity involving Prew to call the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
