More than 6,000 Pounds of Food Donated to Children's Shelter

Lexington County Detention Center correctional officers in partnership with other Lexington County Sheriff’s Department employees, local schools, churches and businesses on Tuesday, April 8 donated 6,252 pounds of non-perishable food items as well as cash, checks and gift cards totaling $3,649 to the Nancy K. Perry Children’s Shelter in Lexington. Officers also donated 200 rolls of paper towels and toilet paper, one case of personal hygiene items and 40 children’s books.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said the food, cash, checks and gift cards were donated to Nancy K. Perry Children’s Shelter Executive Director Jarrell Smith as a result of a food drive that Lexington County Detention Center Lt. Jeremy Vetter coordinated.

Red Bank Elementary School, Pine Ridge Elementary School, Irmo High School, Pivotal Fitness, Pure Fishing, Radius Church Lexington, Radius Church White Knoll, South Carolina Oncology Associates, Nephron Pharmaceuticals, Wal-Mart, Food Lion, Kroger and Piggly Wiggly participated in the food drive, Metts said. Items that the Children’s Shelter will not be able to utilize will be donated to persons in Lexington County who are in need of assistance.

“Jarrell Smith told me that correctional officers donated more food on Tuesday than the Children’s Shelter budgets to buy in one entire year,” Metts said. “Jeremy Vetter did an outstanding job in coordinating such a successful food drive for the Children’s Shelter.”

Vetter and his wife, Whitney Vetter, became involved two years ago in supporting the mission of the Children’s Shelter, starting as foster parents for two children whom the Vetters met at the Children’s Shelter, Metts said.

For the past two years, the Vetters organized efforts to provide Christmas presents for all children who are housed at the Children’s Shelter, Metts said. The Vetters also helped raise money that enabled the Children’s Shelter to enhance the children’s playground at the facility.
