Officers Seize Two Methamphetamine Laboratories

Officers with the Lexington County Multi-Agency Narcotics Enforcement Team (NET) on Friday, April 4 seized two methamphetamine laboratories that were being operated at adjacent homes on Pine Drive near Lexington. Officers arrested two 53-year-old Lexington men, one 50-year-old Leesville man and one 49-year-old Leesville woman in connection with the two methamphetamine laboratories that officers found at the two homes on Pine Drive.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said NET officers arrested Garrett Hutto, 50, of 328 Sugar Bottom Road, Leesville; Marla Minick Hutto, 49, of 328 Sugar Bottom Road, Leesville; and Wayne Ray McGee, 53, of 146 Pine Drive, Lexington.

Officers arrested Garrett Hutto on charges of third-offense manufacturing methamphetamine, third-offense possession of methamphetamine and unlawfully altering pseudoephedrine, Metts said. Officers arrested Marla Hutto on charges of third-offense manufacturing methamphetamine, second-offense possession of a controlled substance and unlawfully altering pseudoephedrine. Officers arrested McGee on charges of third-offense manufacturing methamphetamine, third-offense possession of methamphetamine and second-offense unlawfully altering pseudoephedrine.

Garrett Hutto was being held on Sunday, April 6 at the Lexington County Detention Center on bail totaling $100,000, Metts said. Marla Hutto was being held on Sunday at the county Detention Center on bail totaling $95,000. McGee was being held on Sunday at the county Detention Center on bail totaling $110,000.

NET officers also arrested William Edward Luke, 53, of 125 Pine Drive, Lexington, Metts said.

NET officers arrested Luke on charges of manufacturing methamphetamine, possessing methamphetamine, unlawfully altering pseudoephedrine, improperly disposing of waste from a methamphetamine laboratory and simple possession of marijuana, Metts said. Luke was being held on Sunday at the county Detention Center on bail totaling $55,620.

At about 8:27 p.m. on Friday, NET officers went to McGee’s home in order to investigate a CrimeStoppers tip that a methamphetamine laboratory was being operated at a residence on Pine Drive near Lexington, Metts said. Officers executed a search warrant at McGee’s home and found that a methamphetamine laboratory was being operated at the residence.

Officers arrested Garrett Hutto, Marla Hutto and McGee at McGee’s home, Metts said. Officers dismantled and properly disposed of the methamphetamine laboratory that they found at McGee’s home.

While NET officers were at McGee’s home, officers detected a chemical odor emanating from an adjacent home at 147 Pine Drive, Lexington, that they recognized as an indication that a methamphetamine laboratory also was being operated at the home at 147 Pine Drive.

At about 9:44 p.m. on Friday, NET officers went to the home at 147 Pine Drive, Metts said. Officers found one reaction vessel at the home that had been used to manufacture methamphetamine. Officers also found two scales at the residence and one small plastic container on Luke’s person that contained several grams of marijuana. Officers arrested Luke at the home.

NET officers dismantled the reaction vessel that they found at the home at 147 Pine Drive and properly disposed of the reaction vessel, Metts said.

Metts asked anyone with information about illegal drug activity in Lexington County to call the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC. Citizens also can provide information anonymously by accessing the Crime Tip link on the Sheriff’s Department web site (www.lexingtonsheriff.com).

NET is comprised of officers from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, Batesburg-Leesville Police Department and Lexington Police Department, Metts said. The sheriff and municipal police chiefs implemented NET in 2001 in order to enhance drug enforcement in Lexington County.
