Two Teen-Agers Charged in Burglary at Business


Lexington County Sheriff’s Department detectives on Friday, April 4 charged two 16-year-old Columbia boys as adults in connection with a burglary that occurred on Friday morning at a grocery store on St. Andrews Road near Irmo.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said Johnathan William Hoskins, 16, of 142 Loch Drive, Columbia, and Robert Charles Whalen, 16, of 315 Harrow Drive, Columbia, each were detained as adults on arrest warrants on charges of second-degree burglary, criminal conspiracy and possessing tools that are capable of being used in the commission of a crime. Detectives transported Hoskins and Whalen on Friday to a pre-trial detention facility that the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice operates in Columbia. Hoskins was released from the pre-trial detention facility on a $6,000 personal recognizance bond. Whalen was being held on Sunday, April 6 at the pre-trial detention facility on bail totaling $6,000.

An arrest warrant alleges that at about 3:45 a.m. on Friday Hoskins and Whalen cut open an air-conditioning vent on the roof at KJ’s Market, 543 St. Andrews Road, and unlawfully entered the grocery store with the intent to steal items from the business, Metts said. Hoskins and Whalen had begun collecting merchandise in a large gray trash container when deputies detained Hoskins and later Whalen.

An arrest warrant further alleges that deputies found that Hoskins and Whalen possessed one tool kit, one Black & Decker Fire Storm cordless drill and one knife that were used in the commission of the burglary, Metts said.

Deputies went to the grocery store after the burglar alarm was activated at the business, Metts said. Deputies detained Hoskins at the rear of the store. Deputies detained Whalen outside the store after Whalen unsuccessfully tried to run away from deputies. Hoskins and Whalen each were wearing all-black clothing and ski masks or hoods in order to try to conceal their faces.

Deputies found one hand-saw, one metal drill bit and materials that were used to make a hanging ladder out of PVC pipe on top of the roof at the grocery store, Metts said. Deputies also found that a light fixture had been removed from the interior of the store and placed on the roof in order to create a location for entering the interior of the store from the roof.
