Certified Corrections Manager

The American Correctional Association awarded certifications to Lexington County Detention Center Lt. James Clawson and Lt. Cain Mayrant as certified corrections managers. Clawson and Mayrant attained the certification by demonstrating their professionalism in managing human resources and inmates, enhancing the environment in the detention facility and developing and maintaining expertise in the corrections field.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said Clawson and Mayrant sought certifications as a certified corrections manager in order to enhance their professionalism in supervising correctional officers and managing inmates at the Detention Center.

Clawson serves as the day-shift Housing Division manager, supervising about 46 correctional officers and more than 700 inmates, Metts said. On March 27, 2000, Metts appointed Clawson, 56, of West Columbia, to serve as a correctional officer at the Detention Center.

Mayrant serves as the Booking/Support Services Division manager, supervising about 25 correctional officers who book inmates and manage supplies as well as 35 workers for private companies that contract with Lexington County to provide commissary, medical, mental health and food services at the detention facility, Metts said. On July 3, 2000, Metts appointed Mayrant, 41, of Columbia, to serve as a correctional officer at the Detention Center.

After documenting their experience and accomplishments in the corrections field, Clawson and Mayrant successfully completed a comprehensive examination that the American Correctional Association administers in awarding certifications as a certified corrections manager, Metts said.

“The goal of the American Correctional Association Certification Program is to enhance the overall level of professionalism in the corrections field,” Metts said. “The certification that James and Cain attained shows that James and Cain are knowledgeable about the most current and innovative approaches in supervising correctional officers and managing inmates.”
