Undercover Investigation Results in Arrest of Man who Tried to Sell Stolen Trailer on Craigslist.org


Lexington County Sheriff’s Department detectives on Thursday, January 30 arrested a 34-year-old Lexington man on charges that the man tried to sell on craigslist.org one dual-axle, motor vehicle trailer worth about $2,600 that had been reported stolen and one 2014 black-and-white Can-Am Maverick utility vehicle worth about $20,000 that also had been reported stolen.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said two detectives who were working undercover arranged to meet James Allen Spires, 34, at Spires’ home at 3300 Emanuel Church Road, Lot 4, Lexington, in order to buy the stolen motor vehicle trailer that Spires advertised for sale on craigslist.org. Spires offered to sell the stolen motor vehicle trailer to the two detectives for $1,000 and offered to sell the two detectives the stolen utility vehicle for an additional $1,000.

Detectives arrested Spires on arrest warrants on two counts of receiving stolen goods, Metts said. Spires was being held on Friday, January 31 at the Lexington County Detention Center on bail totaling $5,000.

Arrest warrants allege that at 11:45 a.m. on Thursday Spires possessed the 2014 Can-Am Maverick utility vehicle that had been reported stolen on January 22 from Production Metals, Inc., at 154 Old Barnwell Road near West Columbia, Metts said. The utility vehicle was stored on the Superior dual-axle motor vehicle trailer that was reported stolen on January 28 from Hoover Building Systems Inc., at 1120 Two Notch Road near Lexington.

Arrest warrants further allege that Spires had knowledge to reasonably believe that the motor vehicle trailer and the utility vehicle both were stolen because Spires concealed the circumstances in which he acquired the motor vehicle trailer and the utility vehicle, Metts said. In addition, Spires did not include an actual description of the motor vehicle trailer in the advertisement that he posted on craigslist.org in an effort to sell the motor vehicle trailer. Spires also did not possess any paperwork, such as a bill of sale, to show that Spires legally owned the motor vehicle trailer and utility vehicle.
