Investigators Seize 12 Illegal Gambling Devices

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department narcotics investigators in cooperation with the Irmo Police Department and South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) on Thursday, January 16 seized 12 illegal gambling devices from three businesses on Augusta Road near West Columbia, Columbia Drive in Irmo and Emanuel Church Road near West Columbia.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said investigators seized five Pot-O-Gold-style cabinet video gambling devices, one five-camera video surveillance security system and $70 in cash from Suite G in the Oak Grove Business Park at 2710 Augusta Road, West Columbia.

Sheriff’s investigators and Irmo Police Department officers seized three Pot-O-Gold-style Chess Challenge II cabinet video gambling devices, one Pot-of-Silver quarter-slot cabinet gambling device and one Horoscope scratch-off-style cabinet gambling device at Anchor Lanes bowling alley at 100 Columbia Drive, Irmo, Metts said. Investigators also seized $194 in cash.

Investigators seized two table-top video gambling devices and $938 in cash at the Horseshoe Tavern, 2710 Emanuel Church Road, West Columbia, Metts said. The two gambling devices were equipped with remote systems that are controlled by key fobs that could alter the gaming board on each gambling device from an illegal gambling game to a legal game.

A SLED agent assisted investigators in determining whether the 12 gambling devices were illegal gambling devices under South Carolina law, Metts said.

On Friday, January 17, a Lexington County magistrate ruled that each of the 12 gambling devices were illegal gambling devices, which were subject to seizure by law enforcement officers, Metts said. Under South Carolina law, a magistrate must determine whether each individual gambling device is illegal.

Metts asked anyone with information about illegal gambling devices to call the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC. Citizens also can report information anonymously by accessing the Crime Tip link on the Sheriff’s Department web site (www.lexingtonsheriff.com).
