Deputies Arrest Man for Breaking Into Two Businesses

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputies on Monday, January 13 arrested a 25-year-old Lexington man on charges that the man broke into one business on Charleston Highway near West Columbia and broke into a second business on Pond Branch Road near Leesville. The man stole one 1985 Chevrolet K-5 Blazer, one iPhone cellular telephone and one laptop computer from the Charleston Highway business that were worth a combined total of $9,700. The man also unsuccessfully tried to steal one motor vehicle from the Pond Branch Road business.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said Tommy Lee Stubbs was arrested on arrest warrants on two counts of second-degree burglary and one count of grand larceny. Stubbs was being held on Tuesday, January 14 at the Lexington County Detention Center while awaiting a bond hearing.

Arrest warrants allege that at about 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 11 Stubbs broke into Rock and Roll Auto at 2540 Charleston Highway, West Columbia, with the intent to commit a crime at the business, Metts said. Stubbs stole one red-and-white 1985 Chevrolet K-5 Blazer sport-utility vehicle, one iPhone cellular telephone and one Toshiba laptop computer from the business. Detectives later recovered all of the stolen items, which Stubbs possessed.

A deputy who responded to a call for help concerning the burglary at about 8:53 a.m. on Monday transmitted a Be on the Lookout bulletin for the 1985 Chevrolet K-5 Blazer via the mobile communications terminal in his patrol car, Metts said.

Red Bank Resident Deputy Darren Wiseman received the Be on the Lookout Bulletin and found Stubbs asleep in the rear compartment of the Chevrolet Blazer, which was parked at the intersection of Platt Springs Road and Kyzer Road in the Red Bank community, Metts said.

Deputies later arrested Stubbs, Metts said. Stubbs told detectives that he parked the Chevrolet Blazer on Sunday, January 12 after he realized that he had exhausted the vehicle’s gasoline supply and decided to go to sleep inside the vehicle.

Arrest warrants also allege that between Saturday night and early Sunday morning Stubbs broke into Cabrera Auto Sales at 2613 Pond Branch Road, Leesville, with the intent to steal items from the business, Metts said. Stubbs unsuccessfully tried to “hotwire” a motor vehicle that was parked at the business in an effort to steal the vehicle.

Metts asked anyone with information about additional criminal activity involving Stubbs to contact the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC. Citizens also can provide information anonymously by accessing the Crime Tip link on the Sheriff’s Department web site (www.lexingtonsheriff.com).
