Deputies Arrest Man for Unlawfully Possessing Gambling Devices


Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputies on Tuesday, December 3 arrested a 66-year-old man on charges that the man unlawfully possessed 20 Pot-O-Gold video poker devices that investigators found in a mobile home that the man used as a storage building on his property on Greenwood Drive near West Columbia.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said David Lee Chase, 66, of 3176 Greenwood Drive, West Columbia, turned himself in at 7:03 a.m. on Tuesday at the Lexington County James R. Metts Law Enforcement Complex, 521 Gibson Road, Lexington, on arrest warrants on three counts of unlawfully possessing a gambling device. Chase was booked at the Lexington County Detention Center. Chase was released from the county Detention Center on Tuesday after Chase posted bail totaling $7,500.

Arrest warrants allege that on November 27 Sheriff’s Department narcotics investigators found that Chase unlawfully possessed 20 Pot-O-Gold video poker devices as well as one Suzo Happ Power Pro fan motor for a video poker device, Metts said. Chase told investigators that the gambling devices, furniture and equipment that were stored in the mobile home on his Greenwood Drive property had been used in bars that Chase formerly owned and operated in Greenwood, S.C. and Georgia. Chase lives in a second mobile home on his Greenwood Drive property.

Investigators in cooperation with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) found, identified and seized as illegal video gambling devices the 20 Pot-O-Gold video poker gaming devices that were stored in the mobile home, Metts said.

On November 27, a Lexington County magistrate determined that the 20 Pot-O-Gold video poker devices all were illegal video gambling devices, which were subject to seizure by law enforcement, Metts said. Under South Carolina law, a magistrate must determine whether each individual gambling device is illegal.

At about 3:38 p.m. on November 27, deputies responded to a call concerning a break-in that was in the process of being committed at the mobile home where the illegal video gambling devices were stored, Metts said. Chase told deputies that a man opened the front door at the mobile home and ran away along Greenwood Drive. Deputies have not yet identified the man.

Deputies contacted narcotics investigators when they found the 20 illegal video gambling devices inside the mobile home, along with furniture and other items that appeared to have been used in a bar, Metts said. Narcotics investigators and one SLED agent went to the mobile home and identified the 20 Pot-O-Gold video poker gaming devices as illegal video gambling devices.
