Detectives Obtain Arrest Warrants for Man in Jail on Sexual Assault Charges

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department detectives in cooperation with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department obtained arrest warrants for a 28-year-old Columbia man in connection with the sexual assault of a 23-year-old woman at her home near West Columbia on May 31. The man was being held without bond on Thursday, October 31 at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center on arrest warrants that Richland County sheriff’s detectives obtained for the man for sexual assaults that were not related to the Lexington County sexual assault.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said detectives placed a detainer on Denzil Patrick Jones, 28, of 139 Aster Circle, Columbia, with the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center on arrest warrants on charges of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, kidnapping and possessing a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Detectives will serve Jones with the arrest warrants when Jones is released from the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. Detectives obtained the arrest warrants for Jones on Wednesday, October 30.

Arrest warrants allege that at about 12 a.m. on May 31 Jones unlawfully confined the 23-year-old woman in her home at gunpoint and forced the woman to perform a sexual act on him, Metts said. The woman identified Jones as her assailant. Jones cannot legally possess a firearm.

The 23-year-old woman told deputies that she had met Jones at a convenience store on Airport Boulevard in Cayce about one month before Jones forced the woman to perform a sexual act on him, Metts said. The woman told deputies that she talked with Jones on a regular basis and invited Jones to come to her home on the date that the sexual assault occurred.

After he forced the 23-year-old woman to perform the sexual act on him, Jones told the woman that he would kill her if she tried to leave her home, Metts said. Jones took the woman’s cellular telephone and left the residence.

Metts asked anyone with information about additional criminal activity involving Jones to contact the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC. Citizens also can provide information anonymously by accessing the Crime Tip link on the Sheriff’s Department web site (www.lexingtonsheriff.com).
