Man Arrested for Stealing Electrical Wire At Sand Plant

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputies on Wednesday, October 30 arrested a 43-year-old West Columbia man whom deputies caught in the act of stealing electrical wire that is used to provide electrical power for a conveyor belt system at the Columbia Silica Sand plant on Lowry Road near West Columbia.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said deputies arrested George Steven Masanovich, III, 43, of 205 Earline Drive, West Columbia, on charges of petit larceny and trespassing. Masanovich was being held on Thursday, October 31 at the Lexington County Detention Center while awaiting a bond hearing.

At about 10:28 a.m. on Wednesday, deputies saw Masanovich using a shovel to dig up electrical wire that is used to provide electrical power for the conveyor belt system at the sand plant, Metts said. Deputies found that Masanovich had dug up electrical wire in two locations. Deputies also found that Masanovich had damaged the cover for the electrical motor that powers the conveyor belt system in an attempt to extract copper wire from the motor.

Masanovich planned to sell the electrical wire that he was intent on stealing at the sand plant to a metal recycling company, Metts said. Deputies found a pile of debris several hundred feet from the conveyor belt system where Masanovich had removed the protective casing from electrical wire in order to expose the copper wire that he could sell to a metal recycling company.

Metts asked anyone with information about additional criminal activity involving Masanovich to contact the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC. Citizens also can provide information anonymously by accessing the Crime Tip link on the Sheriff’s Department web site (www.lexingtonsheriff.com).
