Detectives Charge Man with Possessing Four Stolen Fishing Boats


Lexington County Sheriff’s Department detectives arrested a 26-year-old Lexington man on charges that the man possessed four fishing boats and trailers worth a combined total of $51,800 that had been reported stolen to law enforcement. The man also was charged with stealing two electric guitars, one acoustic guitar and one 42-inch, flat-screen television worth a combined total of $2,830 from a home on Stephanie Drive near Lexington.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said detectives arrested Charles Heyward Spires, Jr., 26, of 132 Boiling Springs Lane, Lexington, on arrest warrants on charges of second-degree burglary, grand larceny and receiving stolen goods. Spires also was served with a family court bench warrant that was issued after Spires failed to make court-ordered child support payments in Lexington County. Spires was being held on Wednesday, September 11 at the Lexington County Detention Center on bail totaling $32,130.

An arrest warrant alleges that between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. on September 5 Spires unlawfully entered the home on Stephanie Drive and stole one Sharp 42-inch, flat-screen television, one Schecter Telecaster electric guitar, one Warwick electric bass guitar and one Alvarez acoustic guitar from the living room and bedroom at the residence, Metts said. Spires later unsuccessfully tried to sell the guitars at a pawn shop and musical instrument store. At the time of his arrest, detectives found Spires possessed some of the items that had been reported stolen from the home on Stephanie Drive.

An arrest warrant also alleges that at about 7:59 p.m. on August 11 Spires stole a 19-foot Grady White fishing boat and the trailer on which the boat was stored from outside a home on Highgrove Circle near West Columbia, Metts said. On August 15, detectives recovered the boat in woods off Wolverton Mountain Lane near Lexington.

In addition, an arrest warrant alleges that Spires possessed one U-Haul car hauler, one Traveler fishing boat, one War Eagle fishing boat, one Stingray fishing boat and boat trailers that had been reported stolen to law enforcement, Metts said. On August 15, detectives recovered the stolen car hauler, boats and boat trailers in woods off Wolverton Mountain Lane near Lexington.

Detectives found one set of keys for Spires’ white four-door Chevrolet pickup truck on one of the trailers that detectives recovered in the woods off Wolverton Mountain Lane, Metts said. Witnesses identified Spires as the man who placed stolen items in the woods.

Sheriff’s Department fugitive investigators arrested Spires at about 9 a.m. on Saturday, September 7 in a room at a motel on McSwain Drive near West Columbia, Metts said.
