Detectives Arrest One Additional Man in Convenience Store Robberies

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department detectives in cooperation with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department arrested a 19-year-old Orangeburg man on Friday, July 26 on arrest warrants that allege that the man was a member of a gang that robbed four convenience stores on May 23, June 23, July 8 and July 12 on Augusta Road and Sunset Boulevard in the Lexington and West Columbia communities.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said Dontrell Dwayne Sharperson, 19, of 279 Stacey Bridge Road, Orangeburg, turned himself in to Richland County sheriff’s investigators on Friday on arrest warrants that Lexington County sheriff’s detectives and Lexington Police Department detectives obtained for Sharperson on four counts of armed robbery, four counts of criminal conspiracy, three counts of possessing a weapon during the commission of a violent crime and two counts of kidnapping.

Sharperson was being held on Sunday, July 28 at the Lexington County Detention Center on bail totaling $950,000, Metts said.

Metts and Lexington Police Chief Terrence Green said detectives previously arrested a 16-year-old Columbia boy as well as Rayjon “Savage” Smith, 18, of 2202 Bailey Street, Columbia; and Travis Josiah Bromell, 24, of 3818 Grand Street, Columbia, in connection with the string of robberies at convenience stores. Smith was being held on Sunday at the county Detention Center on bail totaling $300,000.

Bromell was being held on Sunday at the county Detention Center on bail totaling $1.05 million, Metts said. The 16-year-old boy was being held on Sunday at a South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice pre-trial detention facility.

Sharperson, Bromell, Smith and the 16-year-old boy are members of the Bloods criminal street gang, Metts said. In each robbery, the robbers covered their faces with cloths or masks in order to conceal their identities. The robbers ran in the stores, forced clerks to open cash registers and stole an undetermined amount of money, tobacco products and beer before driving off. The robbers targeted convenience stores that are open 24 hours a day on Augusta Road and Sunset Boulevard in the Lexington and West Columbia communities.

Sharperson, Bromell, Smith and the 16-year-old boy are charged with committing robberies at about 2 a.m. on May 23 at a Pitt Stop convenience store, 3809 Sunset Boulevard, West Columbia; at about 2 a.m. on June 23 at a Circle K convenience store, 2308 Augusta Road, West Columbia; at about 3 a.m. on July 8 at a Kangaroo Express convenience store at 3950 Augusta Road, West Columbia; and at about 4 a.m. on July 12 at a Murphy Express convenience store at 4873 Augusta Road, Lexington, Metts said.

Detectives also obtained arrest warrants for Antwon Jamal “Twain” Brown, 18, of 1717 Washington Street, Columbia, on three counts of armed robbery, three counts of possessing a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, three counts of criminal conspiracy and two counts of kidnapping, Metts and Green said.

Brown faces charges in connection with the June 23 robbery at the Circle K convenience store, the July 8 robbery at the Kangaroo Express convenience store and the July 12 robbery at the Murphy Express convenience store, Metts and Green said. Brown was being held on Sunday at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center near Columbia on unrelated charges.
