Deputies Arrest Man for Breaking Into Three Homes

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputies arrested a 23-year-old man on Sunday, July 21 on charges that the man broke into two homes on R.B. Baker Drive near Chapin and one home on Crystal Creek Circle near Chapin. In each burglary, the man consumed food and alcoholic beverages that the homeowners had in their residences.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said deputies arrested Zachary Ray Trantham, 23, who does not have a permanent address, on three counts of first-degree burglary and one count of discharging a firearm in a dwelling. Trantham was being held on Monday, July 22 at the Lexington County Detention Center while awaiting a bond hearing.

Under South Carolina law, a circuit judge would have to conduct a bond hearing for Trantham in general sessions court because first-degree burglary carries a maximum punishment of life in prison, Metts said. The 11th Judicial Circuit Solicitor’s Office has not yet scheduled a bond hearing for Trantham.

An arrest warrant alleges that on Friday, July 19 Trantham forced open the front door at a home on Crystal Creek Circle and stayed at the home without the homeowner’s permission, Metts said. Trantham consumed food and alcoholic beverages that the homeowner had in the home and stayed overnight at the home. A witness contacted the Sheriff’s Department after seeing Trantham at the home and knowing that Trantham did not have permission to be there.

In addition, an arrest warrant alleges that on Sunday, July 21 Trantham forced open a door at the side of a home on R.B. Baker Drive with the intent to commit a crime inside the residence, Metts said.

The arrest warrant further alleges that Trantham consumed food and alcoholic beverages that the homeowner had in the home on R.B. Baker Drive and stayed overnight at the residence while armed with a .410-caliber Savage Arms shotgun, Metts said.

An arrest warrant also alleges that Trantham fired numerous shots from the shotgun while inside the home on R.B. Baker Drive, creating numerous holes in walls inside the residence, Metts said. Trantham tried to use the shotgun to shoot beer cans that he had placed on a table in the home’s dining room.

An arrest warrant also alleges that on Sunday, July 21 Trantham forced open a door at the side of a second home on R.B. Baker Drive with the intent to commit a crime inside the residence, Metts said. Trantham consumed food and alcoholic beverages that the homeowner had in the home, watching television in a recliner as he drank the homeowner’s beer.

The man who owns one of the homes on R.B. Baker Drive contacted the Sheriff’s Department at about 2:50 p.m. on Sunday after he saw that his home had been broken into and found Trantham sitting on a couch inside his residence, Metts said. The homeowner told deputies that he did not know Trantham and said that Trantham did not have permission to be at his home.

Deputies found numerous empty beer cans and empty beer bottles as well as spray paint cans inside the home on R.B. Baker Drive, Metts said. Deputies determined that Trantham fired shots from his shotgun at beer cans that he had placed on a table in the home’s dining room and also fired shots at one flashlight, one vase and one fish that was mounted on a mantel.

Deputies then arrested Trantham in connection with the home break-ins, Metts said.

Metts asked anyone with information about additional criminal activity involving Trantham to contact the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC. Citizens also can provide information anonymously by accessing the Crime Tip link on the Sheriff’s Department web site (www.lexingtonsheriff.com).
