Major John Allard, PIO Office, 785-2415, 24-Hour Press Box: 799-2001, Ext. 1100

Cardboard Boat Regatta

In three months, the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department in partnership with Keep The Midlands Beautiful and local businesses will conduct a Cardboard Boat Regatta at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 19 at the SCE&G public park off S.C. 6 on the Lexington side of the Dreher Shoals Dam on Lake Murray. All proceeds will benefit Keep The Midlands Beautiful.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts encourages citizens to build boats from corrugated cardboard and participate in boat races that will begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 19. Class I boats will be powered by a maximum of two persons, using oars or paddles. Class II boats will be powered by a maximum of three persons, using paddles or leg-powered propellers. Boats with motors or sails will not be allowed to participate in the races.

The entry fee for each participating boat is $20, Metts said. Persons who attend the boat races must pay a fee of $3 per motor vehicle to park at the SCE&G public park.

The public park will be open at 12 p.m. on Saturday, October 19 for participants in the boat races, Metts said. The public park will be open at 1 p.m. for spectators.

Citizens who would like to obtain entry forms for the Cardboard Boat Regatta or who have questions about the event can contact Sheriff’s Department Sgt. David Amick on his cellular telephone at (803) 223-3778 or via email at

Chapin Boat Center, RE/MAX Realty, Hot Dog Express, Palmetto Graphix, Southshore Boat Center and Z-93 FM The Lake are helping sponsor the Cardboard Boat Regatta, Metts said.

The Cardboard Boat Regatta reflects the Sheriff’s Department mission of providing professional law enforcement services that enhance the quality of life for all people in Lexington County, Metts said.
