Murder-Suicide Investigation

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department detectives are investigating an apparent murder-suicide incident that occurred at about 12:26 p.m. on Sunday, July 14 at a home on Lantern Hill Circle near Lexington. It appears that a 23-year-old Lexington man, who lived at the Lantern Hill Circle residence, used a knife to fatally stab his 60-year-old uncle, who also lived at the Lantern Hill Circle residence, and then used a handgun to shoot himself in the head.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said detectives determined that Phillip Brierly, Jr., 23, used a six-inch knife to stab his uncle, Dennis Twiddy, 60, multiple times in Twiddy’s back at the home at 112 Lantern Hill Circle, where the two men lived with other relatives. Deputies later found the knife in Twiddy’s bedroom.

Brierly then went to the home’s laundry room, where it appears that Brierly shot himself in the head with a .38-caliber Rossi handgun, Metts said. Deputies later found the Rossi handgun on Brierly’s body in the laundry room.

Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the apparent murder-suicide as well as a motive for the incident, Metts said.

Brierly entered Twiddy’s bedroom at the Lantern Hill Circle home while armed with the six-inch knife and stabbed Twiddy multiple times in his back, Metts said. Other relatives went towards the bedroom after hearing Twiddy yell that he had been stabbed. Brierly, who now was armed with the Rossi handgun, confronted the relatives as they attempted to disarm Brierly in the home’s living room, pointing the handgun at various relatives.

Brierly fired a gunshot that wounded his father, Phillip Brierly, Sr., 48, in his right shoulder as Phillip Brierly, Sr., held onto the handgun’s barrel, Metts said. Jay Lieurance, Jr., 23, who is the brother-in-law of Phillip Brierly, Jr., also suffered a gunshot wound in the middle finger on his right hand.

After shooting his father and brother-in-law, Phillip Brierly, Jr., walked into the laundry room, where Phillip Brierly, Jr., shot himself in the head with the Rossi handgun.

Lexington County Emergency Medical Services personnel pronounced Phillip Brierly, Jr., and Twiddy dead at the scene of the incident, Metts said. Emergency Medical Services personnel transported Phillip Brierly, Sr., and Lieurance to Lexington Medical Center, where the two men received medical treatment for their gunshot wounds.
