Man Arrested for Breaking Into Home

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputies arrested a 27-year-old Gaston man on Tuesday, July 9 on charges that the man broke into a home on Jacob Circle near Gaston.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said deputies arrested Michael Anthony Sharpe, 27, of 201 Hass Lucas Road, Gaston, on a charge of first-degree burglary. Sharpe was being held on Wednesday, July 10 at the Lexington County Detention Center while awaiting a bond hearing.

Under South Carolina law, a circuit judge would have to conduct a bond hearing for Sharpe in general sessions court because first-degree burglary carries a punishment of life in prison, Metts said. The 11th Judicial Circuit Solicitor’s Office has not yet scheduled a bond hearing for Sharpe.

An arrest warrant alleges that at about 1:17 p.m. on Tuesday Sharpe forced open a door at the side of the home on Jacob Circle with the intent to commit a crime inside the residence, Metts said. Two citizens saw Sharpe break into the home. One of the citizens confronted Sharpe, who then ran away from the residence.

One of the citizens reported the incident to the Sheriff’s Department, Metts said. The two citizens provided a detailed physical description of the man who broke into the Jacob Circle home.

Deputies encountered Sharpe, whose physical description resembled the physical description of the man who broke into the home, running on Sharpes Hill Road near the intersection with Hass Lucas Road and placed Sharpe in investigative detention, Metts said. The two citizens later positively identified Sharpe as the man that they saw break into the home on Jacob Circle. Deputies then arrested Sharpe on the charge of first-degree burglary.

Metts asked anyone with information about additional criminal activity involving Sharpe to call the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC. Citizens also can report information anonymously by accessing the Crime Tip link on the Sheriff’s Department web site (www.lexingtonsheriff.com).
