Deputies Assigned to Interstate Drug Interdiction Seize Nine Pounds of Marijuana

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputies who are assigned to conduct drug interdiction on interstate highways on Tuesday, June 25 seized nine pounds of marijuana with a street value of about $10,000 following a traffic stop that the officers conducted on a motor vehicle on Interstate 20 near Leesville. Deputies arrested two Georgia men who were in the motor vehicle that deputies stopped on charges that the two men intended to sell the marijuana.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said deputies arrested Sumbundu Bacamara, 52, of 1717 Central Villa Drive, Apartment A-12, Atlanta, Ga. and Aly Sallah, 35, of 305 Pointer Court, College Park, Ga., on a charge of possessing marijuana with the intent to distribute it. Bacamara and Sallah were being held on Wednesday, June 26 at the Lexington County Detention Center while awaiting bond hearings.

At about 8:50 p.m. on Tuesday, Deputy Jason Jones, who serves as an interstate drug interdiction officer with the Traffic Division, saw a silver 2001 Lincoln LS sedan pass by his stationary patrol car in the median adjacent to eastbound lanes on Interstate 20 near mile marker 40, Metts said. Jones observed a window tint violation on the car and conducted a traffic stop on the car near mile marker 42 on I-20 near Leesville.

Jones requested assistance from a South Carolina Highway Patrol trooper who has a K-9 police dog that is trained to detect the presence of drugs in motor vehicles, Metts said. The state trooper and his K-9 police dog partner arrived at the scene of the traffic stop. The K-9 police dog detected the presence of drugs in the Lincoln LS sedan.

Jones and Deputy William Patterson, who also serves as an interstate drug interdiction officer with the Traffic Division, placed Sallah and Bacamara in investigative detention after the K-9 police dog alerted to one piece of black luggage in the car’s trunk, Metts said. Jones detected a strong odor of marijuana emanating from the luggage, opened the luggage and found a large black trash bag in the luggage that contained nine clear, plastic, zip-lock bags that each contained one pound of marijuana. The nine pounds of marijuana have a street value of about $10,000.

Jones and Patterson arrested Bacamara and Sallah, Metts said. The two deputies also seized the Lincoln LS sedan that Sallah was driving, Metts said.
