Detectives Seek Help from Citizens in Identifying Person or Persons Who Broke Into Five Churches

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department detectives are seeking help from citizens in identifying the person or persons who broke into five churches near Pelion and Swansea. The first burglary occurred in February. The most recent burglary occurred earlier this week. In most instances, the burglar or burglars stole cash from the churches.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said detectives are investigating a total of three burglaries at Dolorosa Worship Center, 365 Old Charleston Road, Pelion. The church was broken into sometime between February 13 and February 14, again on March 4 and for a third time between May 2 and May 3.

Detectives also are investigating a burglary that occurred between May 11 and May 12 at New Hope Baptist Church, 249 New Hope Church Road, Pelion, and a burglary that occurred between May 14 and May 15 at King Grove Baptist Church, 1580 Highway 178, Swansea, Metts said. In addition, detectives are investigating a burglary that occurred between Monday, May 20 and Tuesday, May 21 at Calvary United Methodist Church, 1130 Calvary Church Road, Swansea, and a burglary that occurred between Sunday, May 19 and Tuesday, May 21 at Ebenezer United Methodist Church, 2805 Highway 178, Swansea.

Each of the five churches is located in a rural area, Metts said. Similar burglaries have occurred at three churches in Calhoun County and five churches in Orangeburg County.

Metts asked anyone with information about the burglaries at the five churches near Pelion and Swansea to contact the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
