Officers Seize Clandestine Methamphetamine Laboratory

Officers with the Lexington County Multi-Agency Narcotics Enforcement Team (NET) on Wednesday, May 15 seized a clandestine methamphetamine laboratory that was being operated at a home on Old Orangeburg Road near Lexington. NET officers and Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputies arrested a 32-year-old West Columbia man, 39-year-old Lexington man and 25-year-old Lexington woman on charges that they operated the methamphetamine laboratory.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said officers arrested William Christopher Brown, 32, of 800 State Street, Unit 136, West Columbia; William Thomas Morgan, 39, of 109 Chadwood Circle, Lexington; and Crystal Marie Rackley, 25, of 109 Shadwood Circle, Lexington. Officers arrested Brown, Morgan and Rackley on a charge of manufacturing methamphetamine. Brown, Morgan and Rackley were being held on Wednesday at the Lexington County Detention Center while awaiting bond hearings.

Deputies received information on Wednesday that a clandestine methamphetamine laboratory was being operated at a home at 1621-A Old Orangeburg Road, Metts said. When deputies arrived at the home at about 3:51 a.m. on Wednesday, they detected a strong chemical odor emanating from the home that they recognized from training that they had received as an indication that a methamphetamine laboratory was being operated at the home.

Deputies found trash and waste scattered around the home that appeared to be connected to a clandestine methamphetamine laboratory, Metts said. Deputies encountered a hazy atmosphere inside the residence and detected an even stronger chemical odor. Deputies found Brown, Morgan and Rackley asleep in a bedroom.

Deputies searched a backpack in the bedroom at the home and found one reaction vessel that actively was being used to manufacture methamphetamine, Metts said. Two additional reaction vessels that actively were being used to manufacture methamphetamine also were found at the home. Items that are used to manufacture methamphetamine were found scattered throughout the residence.

Metts asked anyone with information about illegal drug activity in Lexington County to call the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC. Citizens also can provide information anonymously by accessing the Crime Tip link on the Sheriff’s Department web site (www.lexingtonsheriff.com).

NET is comprised of officers from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, Batesburg-Leesville Police Department and Lexington Police Department, Metts said. The sheriff and municipal police chiefs implemented NET in 2001 in order to enhance drug enforcement in Lexington County.
