12 Persons Arrested in Undercover Drug Investigation

Officers with the Lexington County Multi-Agency Narcotics Enforcement Team (NET) conducted a five-month undercover investigation concerning illegal sales of crack cocaine at a home at 3728 Colony Park Lane near West Columbia. The investigation resulted in the arrests of 12 persons on drug charges.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said NET officers on Sunday, July 15 arrested Treshawn Alexander, 17, of 443 Gardners Terrace Road, West Columbia, on an arrest warrant on a charge of distribution of crack cocaine. Alexander was released from the Lexington County Detention Center on Monday, July 16 after he posted a $15,000 bond.

NET officers on Sunday arrested Curley Brooks, Jr., 35, of 443 Gardners Terrace Road, West Columbia, on an arrest warrant on a charge of third-offense distribution of crack cocaine, Metts said. Brooks was released from the county Detention Center on Monday after he posted a $25,000 bond.

On Sunday, NET officers also arrested Beverly Mitchell Langston, 55, of 3728 Colony Park Lane, West Columbia, on arrest warrants on charges of distribution of crack cocaine and possession of crack cocaine, Metts said. Langston was being held on Thursday, July 19 at the county Detention Center on bail totaling $20,000.

In addition, NET officers on Sunday arrested Rae Lynn McCraw, 44, of 106 Boone Lane, Swansea, on a charge of possessing crack cocaine, Metts said. McCraw was released from the county Detention Center on Tuesday, July 17 after she posted bail totaling $5,200.

NET officers arrested Langston and McCraw at Langston’s home, where officers found a sawed-off, 12-gauge Mossberg shotgun in a bedroom, Metts said. Officers arrested Alexander and Brooks at Brooks’ Gardners Terrace Road home.

NET officers initiated the undercover investigation after receiving numerous complaints about drug dealing at the Colony Park Lane home, Metts said. During the course of the investigation, officers saw as many as 30 motor vehicles in one hour drive up to the home in order to buy crack cocaine at the residence.

During the investigation, Metts said officers also arrested eight persons who each were charged with attempting to buy crack cocaine at the Colony Park Lane home: Dwayne Anthony Barton, 39, of 481 Calhoun Road, St. Matthews; Tiffany Ann Chavis, 24, of 923 Bachman Dykes Road, Swansea; Michael Lee Gantt, 27, of 205 Jimmy Martin Circle, Gaston; Sanford Moore Gilliam, 44, of 114 Geiger Road, West Columbia; Cassandra Mack, 50, of 3941 Charleston Highway, Lot 120, West Columbia; James Richard Padgett, 47, of 117 Sturkie Lane, Gaston; Douglas Arthur Skaggs, 51, of 167 Hammond Avenue, West Columbia; and Kenneth Tyrone Williams, 46, of 224 Leland Drive, Gaston.

The case remains under investigation, Metts said. The sheriff said NET officers might arrest additional persons in connection with the undercover investigation of drug dealing at the Colony Park Lane home.

Metts asked anyone with information about illegal drug activity in Lexington County to call the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC. Citizens also can provide information anonymously by accessing the Crime Tip link on the Sheriff’s Department web site (www.lexingtonsheriff.com).

NET is comprised of officers from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, Batesburg-Leesville Police Department, Irmo Police Department and Lexington Police Department, Metts said. The sheriff and municipal police chiefs implemented NET in 2001 in order to enhance drug enforcement in Lexington County.
