Test of Jail Siren

An alarm siren at the Lexington County Detention Center will be activated briefly at 9 a.m. on Thursday, October 22 in order to test the siren, which can be used to alert residents in nearby neighborhoods in the event that an inmate escapes from the Detention Center at the Lexington County James R. Metts Law Enforcement Complex, 521 Gibson Road, Lexington.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said administrators at the county Detention Center periodically activate the facility’s siren in order to ensure that the siren is in working order.

In the event that an inmate escapes from the Detention Center, the facility’s alarm siren would be activated at the direction of the senior officer on duty at the facility, Metts said. The siren is designed to provide residents in neighborhoods near the Detention Center with timely notification after it has been determined that an inmate has escaped from the detention facility.

In addition to sounding the siren, the Sheriff’s Department would notify the Lexington County Communications Center in the event that an inmate escapes from the Detention Center, Metts said. Telecommunications operators would broadcast Be On the Lookout bulletins over a police radio system concerning the inmate’s escape. The inmate who escaped also would be entered as an escapee on the National Crime Information Center computer database.
