FALSE ALARM REDUCTION PROGRAM
The primary objective of the False Alarm Reduction Program is to decrease, through education and accountability, the number of repetitive malfunctioning and false alarms that Sheriff’s Department personnel must respond to. The False Alarm Reduction Program began with the passing of Lexington County Ordinance 05-15 governing false alarms in the unincorporated areas of Lexington County. The ordinance, enacted by Lexington County Council, outlines responsibilities of alarm owners, alarm companies and public safety officials.
In summary, alarm owners are allowed two false or malfunctioned alarms before a fee is assessed. The fee can range from $25 to $200 per alarm. When a false alarm has occurred at a location, the alarm owner should receive a notice from law enforcement or fire service personnel indicating a false alarm occurred at the location. Additionally, after the second alarm, a warning letter will be sent to the location indicating a fee will be assessed should a third false alarm occur.
The ordinance was enacted in 2006, and within the first six months, the ordinance helped to reduce false alarms by 24%.
The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department works in partnership with alarm companies and alarm owners to address chronic alarms that occur due to malfunctioning alarm equipment or operator error. The Sheriff’s Department is committed to reducing false alarms so that more officers are available to respond to high priority calls in a more timely manner.
If you are experiencing problems with your alarm, you are encouraged to contact your alarm company as soon as possible. If you have questions or concerns after reading the false alarm ordinance, call the Sheriff’s Department at (803) 785-8230 and ask to speak to the False Alarm Coordinator.
The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department is a proud member of the False Alarm Reduction Association (FARA). For more information about FARA, visit their website at www.faraonline.org.
