Safety Achievement Award

At a recent County Council Meeting, the Risk Management and Solid Waste Management Team was presented the 2006 Safety Achievement Award from the South Carolina Association of Counties (SCAC) in recognition of the County's "Safety Counts Program." In July of 2006 Solid Waste Management Director Joe Mergo, and his staff introduced program initiatives, such as highly visible vests and signage, to remind employees and citizens to "Do Your Part, Always Think Safety First."

Fuel Surcharge to be Added to Curbside Collection Cost

In January 2007, the monthly cost for curbside collection of household garbage, yard waste and recyclable materials increased slightly for Lexington County residents who participate in the Curbside Solid Waste Collection Program.  A monthly fuel surcharge fee caused the charges to rise to a total of $14.94 for Johnson’s Garbage Service and Southland Sanitation customers.

The base fee for curbside waste collection will remain at $14.50 per month through September 2008. The base fee does not include the cost of the $0.44 fuel surcharge, which will be reviewed in September 2007.

Lexington County negotiated a franchise agreement for curbside waste collection that protects participating residents from unreasonable cost increases while allowing contractors to charge a reasonable additional monthly surcharge to compensate for increased fuel costs in operating garbage trucks.  For additional details, click here.
