| General Information |
The County is divided into nine districts from which members of Council are elected for four-year terms. The Council serves as the governing body of the County and enacts laws by ordinance. In addition, the Council members appoint the membership of special boards and have an influence on several other regional commissions.
Members of various boards and commissions are chosen from the community. They are people who have displayed an interest in the board's work and possess leadership skills that would be an asset to the board and the County.

Lexington County Received the Creating Environmental Success and Sustainable Public Health Protection Awards |

At the September 22, 2009 Council meeting, Council Chairman Debbie Summers received the Creating Environmental Success Award on behalf of Lexington County for performance and innovation in the State Revolving Fund "Creating Environmental Success” from David Price, P.E., Assistant Director, Water Facilities Compliance Manager, Bureau of Water, Drinking Water Compliance Section - SC Dept of Health and Environmental Control.

Mr. Price also awarded the Sustainable Public Health Protection Award to Synithia Williams, Public Works Environmental Coordinator, on behalf of Lexington County Public Works. The award was for sustainable public health protection.

Also during the September 22, 2009 Council meeting, Councilman Johnny Jeffcoat presented a resolution to Mrs. Tammy Johns-Brown, recently crowned as the 2009 Mrs. United States. Also pictured is her husband. |

| Fisher Tank Holds Groundbreaking |
Fisher Tank’s groundbreaking on August 5, 2009 marked the beginning of the transition to their new home in the Batesburg-Leesville Industrial Park. Not only does Fisher Tank bring its reputation as a leader in the storage tank industry, but it also creates an investment in the community that fosters several new job opportunities. With over thirty people attending, Lexington County, Batesburg Leesville, SC Department of Commerce and the Central SC Alliance showed their enthusiasm in welcoming Fisher Tank to its new community and showed their appreciation to a company that has been a part of the Lexington business community for twenty years. The groundbreaking was the culmination of a state, county and local government process and the cooperation that went into making the expansion possible.

| AT&T Presents Check to County for Industrial Park |
AT&T recently presented Lexington County with a $35,000 check to assist with the site certification process of the Saxe Gotha Industrial Park. The industrial park, located on Interstate 26 just south of Interstate 77, is served by rail and has direct access to water, sewer, gas and telecommunications. The Saxe Gotha Industrial Park will help attract industry and create jobs, impacting lives throughout the region.

9/11 Monument Artwork Presented to Council |
At a recent meeting, County Council was presented with a painting of the 9/11 monument, “Fallen but not Forgotten". Sculptor Randall Hammond and Artist Val Zaba made the presentation to Council.
Sculptor Randall Hammond was commissioned to design and create the monument by the Leadership Lexington Class of 2007. The painting is by Lexington County Artist Val Zaba of Chapin.
The sculpture was completed for the anniversary of 9/11 in 2008. The design of the monument depicts the skeletal remains of the World Trade Center at Ground Zero. Stone from Pennsylvania representing the crash site of Flight 93 in Shanksville forms the bed of the sculpture. The Pentagon crash is represented by the five sides of the design. The three firemen represented are NYC Firemen from Ladder Company 101. The monument is located in Lexington at the Government Plaza for public viewing. | Kids Kamp Volunteers Recognized |
Representative Mac Toole recently presented plaques to staff, council members and business leaders of Lexington County for ten years of support to Congaree Kids Kamp. Churches in Lexington, West Columbia, Columbia, and surrounding communities have joined together to provide this free camp for 1,200+ children annually. More than 400 volunteers participate in Kids Kamp each year to provide ministry, activities and meals for the children ages four - sixteen years.

| Council Receives County Achievement Award |
Lexington County Council formally accepted the 2008 J. Mitchell Graham Memorial Award from the South Carolina Association of Counties during its meeting on Tuesday, August 26. The award recognizes the achievements of the Lexington County Jail Overcrowding Committee in reducing by 22 percent the average daily inmate population at the county’s Detention Center since 2006.
The committee includes representatives from the Sheriff’s Department, the Clerk of Court’s Office, Magistrate's Office, Public Defender, 11th Circuit Solicitor’s Office, and County Council as well as the chief administrative circuit judge for Lexington County. In addition to cooperation among the participating departments, the committee addressed inmate population management issues through partnerships with other agencies including: Probation Pardon and Parole, Solicitor’s Violent Crime Task Force, Celebrate Recovery, LRADAC/The Behavioral Health Center of the Midlands, the Midlands Fatherhood Coalition and Municipal law enforcement officials.

Two Lexington County Businesses Honored for Recycling |
Two Lexington County businesses were honored for their outstanding waste reduction and recycling programs at the first S.C. Smart Business Recycling Program Awards Luncheon. The awards luncheon was hosted by the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control on April 28, 2009. Lexington County honorees included Lexington Medical Center, located in West Columbia, and Sun Printing also located in West Columbia. Click here for the full story.

| Recent Council Recognitions |
Lexington County Recognized for Flood Prevention Accomplishments
Chris Stone, Lexington County Floodplain Manager, recently accepted an award on behalf of the County for obtaining a Class 8 rating under FEMA’s voluntary Community Rating System (CRS) Program. As a result of this achievement, flood insurance policy holders in the county will see a five percent reduction in flood insurance rates. Presenting the award is Lisa Jones, DNR State Coordinator of the Flood Mitigation Program. For more information on the CRS Program, click here.
DHEC Presents Spare the Air Awards
Lexington County recently received two DHEC 2008 Spare the Air Awards presented by Myra Reece, DHEC Bureau Chief for Air Quality. Synithia Williams received an individual award and Lexington Medical Center received an award for being environmentally conscious.

CMC of SC Award Recognition
County Council recently recognized CMC Steel of SC who received the "2008 Best Large Recycling Business Award" from the SC Department of Commerce and the State Recycling Market Development Advisory Committee. Located in Lexington County, CMC Steel South Carolina is one of the most productive rebar mills in the world and is also a world-class mini-mill producing a wide array of products. By using steel scrap, CMC Steel South Carolina is an important contributor to recycling efforts. The scrap is sorted and classified so that it adheres to the strict chemical and residual requirement of the various grades produced at the mill.

Lexington County Lands Aviation Facility |
West Star Aviation, Inc. announced that it will create a maintenance and refurbishment facility in Lexington County. The company’s investment is expected to be approximately $9 million and will create 105 new jobs. This is the company’s fourth location in the United States and the first one on the East Coast. | New SC State Farmers Market Breaks Ground in Lexington County |
State and local leaders broke ground recently for the new State Farmers Market to be located in Lexington County. It will be a state-of-the-art agricultural complex serving both private and public sectors. See news release for more details.

| Student Athletes Lead Pledge at Council Meeting |

Gaston/Swansea Special Olympics student athletes, part of the Unified Sports Program at Swansea High School, led the Pledge of Allegiance at the County Council Meeting on October 14. These students learn Olympic-type sports while fostering positive relationships between persons with and without disabilities. They participate in local and state competitions; and many will have the opportunity to advance to Regional, National, or World Games. |

Jones Receives Resolution from Council |
Lt. John E. “J.J.” Jones received a Resolution from Council for receiving the 2008 Deputy of the Year Award from the South Carolina Sheriffs’ Association. Jones is the first Lexington County deputy in more than three decades to receive the prestigious law enforcement honor. Read the full Resolution presented to Lt. Jones who serves as assistant commander of the Sheriff’s Department Region II Patrol District.

Wilson Receives Resolution from Council |
Retired Resident Deputy Wayne Wilson received a Resolution in recognition of his 10 years of outstanding service with the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department and 20 years of distinguished service as Police Chief for the Town of South Congaree. His contribution to community-based policing and crime prevention was commended.

United States Navy Week in Lexington County |
Lexington County Council proclaimed September 20 - 27, 2008 as United States Navy Week in Lexington County. On behalf of the citizens of Lexington County, the proclamation saluted all who have served and are serving in the Navy and thanked them for their immeasurable efforts.

| County Council Receives Golden Palmetto Award |
The S.C. Department of Disabilities and Special Needs (SCDDSN) presented the Golden Palmetto Award to Lexington County Council and Solid Waste Management for the employment of Babcock Center residents at Collection and Recycling Stations. The relationship is successful and rewarding both for the County and SCDDSN.

Recognitions from the July 2008 Council Meeting |
Councilman Bill Banning presented a Resolution from Council to Lewis McCarty for his excellent service with the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department from 1973 to 1999. During that time Mr. McCarty had served as Assistant Sheriff and then as Chief Deputy. Pictured is Councilman Banning (left) with Mr. McCarty.

| Michelin and Lexington County |
Recently, Lexington County Council presented the County flag to Michelin North America during a press announcement. Michelin is planning to invest an additional $90 million to upgrade equipment and further expand production capacity at the Lexington County facility. The commitment by Michelin of $110 million in August 2007, coupled with the current announcement brings the Michelin investment in Lexington County in excess of $900 million since establishing operations in 1981.
